Nantucket Bay Scallops Trading Co.

The Nantucket Bay Scallop Trading Co. was launched in 2012 by the Whelden brothers—Alex, Drew, and John—who were inspired by their family’s strong ties to the island and its fishing heritage. Initially, they began freezing Nantucket bay scallops for their family’s Lobster Trap restaurant, but the business quickly grew, allowing them to deliver fresh scallops across the country. The brothers balance the challenges of running a family-owned business with a deep appreciation for Nantucket’s traditions, especially its renowned scalloping season.

Their roots in the island’s fishing industry and their childhood experiences on the water shaped their commitment to providing a high-quality, local product. Beyond simply selling scallops, they’re invested in preserving the island’s scalloping legacy, mindful of its sustainability and impact on the local economy. The Lobster Trap, a fixture on Nantucket since the 1970s, has expanded to include a popular food truck offering a Nantucket Bay Scallop Roll, showcasing the family’s dedication to island flavors and the local seafood community.

We harvest our Scallops during the off season from November to January we turn restaurants prep kitchen into a scallop shanty. 

Each morning we head out on the water to harvest our daily limit. We bring them back to the shanty for processing where we open, vacuum seal, and flash freeze within hours of harvest.  This gives us the ability to provide our customers with the opportunity to taste the freshest bay scallops possible during the summer months, when the fishery is closed.
